Carmen Maura Toplines Invicta Films’ ‘The Kids Are Back’

Former Pedro Almodovar muse Carmen Maura (“Volver,” “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”) leads a stellar cast from Mexico that includes Cecilia Suarez (“Spanglish”), Fernando Lujan (“Nora’s Will”) and Irene Azuela (“Miss Bala”) in Invicta Films’ first feature film, “The Kids Are Back.” The directorial debut of film critic-researcher Hugo Lara, the $2 million high -concept comedy kicked off principal photography last week in Mexico, and is targeted for a release in the Fall of next year.

Presented at the recent 5th Los Cabos Int’l Film Festival, talks are underway with potential distributors and sales agents, said Invicta Founder/CEO Javier Gonzalez Rubio.

Gonzalez is an AFI graduate as is the company’s head of production, Enrique Latapi. Development and acquisitions head Pancho Westendarp holds a Master in Fine Arts from the State U of New York and an MA in docu production from the Autonomous U of Barcelona.

Gonzalez Rubio was an associate producer on Patricia Riggen’s “Under the Same Moon” and was an assistant to the producer on Cary Fukunaga’s breakout hit, “Sin Nombre.” as well as a development and acquisitions exec at Focus Features.

“The Kids Are Back” turns on a retired couple whose lives are upended when their adult children come home to live. “It’s such a universal story; I’ve heard of so many people who’ve gone through this experience,” said Gonzalez.

Prior to its Los Cabos participation, the comedy was presented at Cannes’ 2015 Marche du Film and the Cartagena Int’l Film Festival last Spring.

Invicta has produced a slew of documentaries, music videos, and a couple of shorts, both shot in the U.S.
